My mentor DTM Douglas Keeler was once helping me improve a written speech and said these words. What he meant was -- if you look closely at the process of polishing, it is actually a series of scratches on the surface that helps clear it of blemishes. Same holds for improving a speech. You keep improving it with a series of refinements.
Whatever you are doing, keep removing imperfections, one scratch at a time.
